How did you find out about the HCC: I found out about the HCC from a student who was a past volunteer at the HCC in the summer of 2015.
Projects: I worked on the project with Maisha Hutton on the sodium and sugar levels in local products found in supermarkets in Barbados. As well as, working on different ways to educate the public about ” how to read labels” and how to be “consumer smart”.
How was your experience with the HCC: Volunteering at the HCC was a refreshing and promising experience. I learned quite a bit of skills that the academic system in universities fail to teach students such as people skills, communication skills and more of a “hands on experience”. This definitely heightened my confidence and gave me a greater motivation to become more involved in different volunteer positions inside and outside of school. Communicating with persons on what they have accomplished in their lives and their journey also allows you to further think about what is the next step. Overall, I would recommend any student to volunteer here to allow them to expand their horizons and gather some skills for the future.
Future plans: I am currently finishing my undergraduate degree and my future plans are to undergo my master’s degree in Health and Nutrition and after become a dietitian.
