How did you find out about the HCC: I learned about HCC when I was searching online for different organizations focusing on physical activity at workplaces. Though this was not a current project at HCC but a former, I was happy to end on their webpage to learn more about their current work in the Caribbean.
Project: Physical Activity in Adolescents.
Primary outputs: (read more here)
- Graphic materials for secondary schools on Brain Breaks and physical activity.
- Graphic materials on physical education barriers and improvements
- Physical Activity in Adolescents report.
I also created a set of Lets get Active at Home, COVID-19 related physical activity visuals for social media.
How was your experience at the HCC: My experience at HCC was very good. Even though HCC did not work on the project I originally wanted to contribute to, I am truly happy I got the opportunity to work with physical activity, which is one of the areas within health I am passionate about. It was very interesting exploring physical education along with physical activity in a different culture and the barriers within.
From the very first meeting I felt welcomed and as a part of the team. I was grateful for being able to interview PE teachers and start conversations with them and principals on how to improve the school environment in Barbados when it comes to physical activity.
Along with improving my research and interviewing, I was honoured to be a part of the Youth Coalition. I truly enjoyed meeting so many inspiring youth advocates and being able to take part in sharing knowledge about sugar intake and physical activity to the individuals of the society.
My time in Barbados went far too quickly, and I am very sure I will be back at some point !
I keep fingers crossed for the opportunity of seeing my posters at the secondary schools and hear from the PE teachers and principals that the students are more active in the secondary schools.
Future plans: I will finish my bachelor in 1.5 years and after that hopefully, be a part of the health promotion happening all over the world. I hope to be a part of changing unhealthy habits and inspire to a healthy lifestyle for many, many years along with creating a healthier environment in schools and at workplaces.
