Webinar: How Are Some Food Industry Actors Working Against Octagonal Warning Labels?
In support of the See the Truth campaign, HCC and partners hosted a webinar on 22 February 2024. The webinar, brought together civil society advocates, academics and policymakers to share experiences of weak governance and industry interference, and discussed strategies to protect NCD policymaking processes from interference.
The See the Truth campaign was launched on 22 January 2024, by the Healthy Caribbean Coalition (HCC) and Partners, the Heart Foundation of Jamaica (HFJ), the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Barbados (HSFB), and the Jamaica Youth Advocacy Network (JYAN). See the Truth, a six-week long, regional social media campaign aimed to promote healthy food policies – like the front of package octagonal warning label (FOPWL), building support for the implementation of measures to safeguard policymaking processes by highlighting industry interference tactics deployed during the CARICOM Standards Approval process in opposition to octagonal warning labels and the PAHO nutrient profile model. See the Truth complements HCC’s broader advocacy to support the implementation of healthy food policies across the region and builds on previous campaigns such as Make it Make Sense, People Over Profit and Octagonal Warning Labels Help Consumers Act on Facts.

Youth Meeting in Barbados, Empowering Caribbean Youth Voices for Health Advocacy – Igniting Change for Healthy Food Policies |
The Healthy Caribbean Coalition (HCC) and Healthy Caribbean Youth (HCY), in partnership with the Jamaica Youth Advocacy Network (JYAN), the Heart Foundation of Jamaica (HFJ), The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Barbados (HSFB), and UNICEF Jamaica, hosted a regional youth meeting, “Caribbean Youth Voices in Health Advocacy Spaces – Healthy Food Policy Action”, from February 7th to 9th, 2024, in Bridgetown, Barbados.
This three-day health policy focused youth meeting, a first of its kind in the Caribbean, adds to the ongoing efforts of the partners to build capacity and momentum to empower the region’s youth to advocate for the implementation of Healthy Food Policies. The meeting focused on the implementation of octagonal front-of-package nutrition warning labeling and restricting the availability and marketing of unhealthy products in and around school settings.

Barbados Today: Businesses shouldn’t be able to promote harmful foods to children, the head of the Non-Communicable Diseases Commission said Thursday as a childhood obesity prevention campaign rolled out to schools.
Declaring the launch of the School Nutrition Policy in 2023 was arguably a success for the group and doctors who have pushed for years to cut the number of sugary drinks in schools, Bulbulia said more needs to be done to address the daily advertising of unhealthy foods and drinks to children.

Youth Suicide Prevention: Recognize the Signs |
Caribbean Life: Children and teens can be moody, but when signs of mental health troubles last for weeks, don’t assume it’s just a passing mood. Suicide is a leading cause of death among U.S. children, teens and young adults ages 10-24, and rates have been on the rise. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all teens be screened for suicide risk starting at age 12.
