O'Neill Institute Summer Program on Non-Communicable Diseases and the Law Georgetown University will offer a course on Non-Communicable Diseases and the Law, from 17 to 21 June, 2013, in Washington, D.C. and is suited to lawyers and officials and advocates working on non-communicable diseases. The program will bring together leading practitioners, policymakers, advocates, and academics in global health to explore the role and implications of law in the global response to non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Also, will include interactive lectures, panels, and case studies will examine legal powers, duties, and constraints relevant to NCDs. Read more

Assault on cancer Barbados Today May 14th - Non-Governmental Organisations across the region will begin a move next month to get regional governments to look seriously at the issue of cervical cancer, the second leading cause of death in the Caribbean. Led by the locally-based umbrella body, Healthy Caribbean Coalition, an e-petition is set to be launched utilising technologies across the region to gain 250,000 signatures as the starting point to drive action on the part of governments and hopefully with the assistance of CARICOM. TXT TO STOP Barbados Today May 14th - Barbados is set to be the testing ground for a small US-funded project looking at the effectiveness of a technology driven campaign targeting smokers. Discussions on the mobile health campaign, which will be led by the Barbados Cancer Society and facilitated by the Healthy Caribbean Coalition are currently ongoing with the National Institute of Cancer and the Department of Health and Human Services in the US aimed at getting smokers to quit. World Health Statistics 2013 World Health Statistics 2013 contains WHO’s annual compilation of health-related data for its 194 Member States, and includes a summary of the progress made towards achieving the health-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and associated targets. This year, it also includes highlight summaries on the topics of reducing the gaps between the world’s most-advantaged and least-advantaged countries, and on current trends in official development assistance (ODA) for health.
