HCC strongly supports Jamaica and it's recently passed tobacco regulations - July 25th - The Healthy Caribbean Coalition (HCC) very strongly supports and congratulates the Jamaican Government on the Public Health (Tobacco Control) Regulations-2013 in Jamaica which bans smoking in all public places and workplaces and makes provision for the introduction of graphic health warnings on cigarette packs within 6 months in keeping with the CARICOM Regional standard for the Labeling of tobacco products. Caribbean group supports Ja’s smoking ban (Jamaica Gleaner) Jerome Reynolds, Staff Reporter. The Jamaican government is receiving more support for prohibiting smoking in public spaces and in the work place.Regional non-government interest group Healthy Caribbean Coalition says it strongly supports the ban and congratulates the Government on the move.The Coalition stresses that exposure to tobacco smoke causes serious heart disease, and strokes, lung diseases, and several forms of cancer.President of the Coalition Professor Trevor Hassell says the passage of the regulation will help to save many lives which will be of overall economic benefit to Jamaica. Trinidad & Tobago Cancer Society Gala Fundraising Concert 17th August 2013 - On August 17th, 2013, the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago will be treated to a performance literally fit for royalty. The twice nominated Brit-Awards classical UK band “Blake” will grace the National Academy for the Performing Arts with a show featuring The Love Movement that boasts not only to be one of a kind, but also for a worthy cause. The objective of this fundraising concert is the purchase of a Digital Mammography System with Stereotactic Biopsy Attachment at The Trinidad & Tobago Cancer Society which costs approximately $2.2M. While the proceeds from this concert will not cover the full cost, it would certainly contribute towards the cost of the unit. Read more
One third of world's population benefits from effective tobacco control measure - At 2.3 billion, the number of people worldwide covered by at least one life-saving measure to limit tobacco use has more than doubled in the last five years, according to the WHO Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic 2013. The number of people covered by bans on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship, the focus of this year’s report, increased by almost 400 million people residing mainly in low- and middle-income countries. Multimillion Coca-Cola advertising campaign is withdrawn and sanctioned for being misleading and representing a health risk Mexico - Coca Cola’s “149 calories” campaign is the largest investment in publicity that Mexican authorities have withdrawn and fined. The campaign was also withdrawn by authorities in the UK due to protests by consumers. Mexico City, July 22, 2013. Coca Cola’s “149 calories” advertising campaign, which was present on thousands of billboards throughout Mexico, with radio spots and TV ads, print ads and on Internet, has been withdrawn and sanctioned in Mexico by the Federal Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risk. New WHO Discussion paper on Global Coordination Mechanism on NCDs - WHO has released a Discussion Paper on the Draft Terms of Reference for a Global Coordination Mechanism for NCDs. The paper is available online, and provides the basis for a WHO online consultation until October 30th. The Discussion Paper is framed around seven overarching questions to guide responses from Member States, UN agencies, NGOs and relevant private sector entities. Read More
