Caribbean must adopt laws to control tobacco epidemic - PAHO - WASHINGTON D.C., United States, Wednesday February 19, 2014, CMC - The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is urging Caribbean countries to speed up the adaption of laws to control the tobacco “epidemic,” saying that, despite progress in the countries of the Americas, the epidemic continues to grow. In a new report, PAHO, the regional office for the Americas of the World Health Organization (WHO), said applying at least six measures could help prevent one million deaths annually. Read more

Cancer Support Services holds its first prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing
On Saturday, February 15th, Cancer Support Services (CSS) held its first prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing for 2014. CSS continues to promote early detection through the PSA test has been widely used to screen men for prostate cancer. Testing takes place at CSS “Arborside” Belmont Road, St. Michael every 3 months. The turnout was another clear indication that men are taking charge of their health, noted Mrs. Antoinette Hunte, a Nurse with Spectrol Medical Laboratory Ltd. Read more

The CARICOM Summit on Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases – the first government summit ever devoted to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) – was convened by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) in Trinidad and Tobago in September 2007. Tuck, Camille R. Ragin, Benjamin A. Spencer) Abstract Cancer screening disparities between black and white groupings are well-documented. Less is known regarding African-descent subpopulations despite elevated risk, distinct cultural backgrounds, and increasing numbers of Caribbean migrants. A systematic search of Medline, Web of Science, PubMed and SCOPUS databases (1980–2012) identified 53 studies reporting rates of breast, prostate, cervical, and colorectal screening behavior among immigrant and non-immigrant Caribbean groups. Monteiro) - Abstract - Aims To describe mortality from diseases, conditions and injuries where alcohol was a necessary cause in selected countries in the Americas. Design A descriptive, population-based study. Setting The data come from 16 countries in North, Central and South America for the triennium 2007–09 (latest available data). Participants/Cases A total of 238 367 deaths were analyzed. measurements We calculated age-adjusted and age-specific mortality rates by sex and country using the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) mortality database.
