Background - The Chronic Disease Research Centre (CDRC) was founded in 1992 as a department of The University of
the West Indies (UWI), at the Cave Hill Campus in Barbados. It is now established as a world-class
research centre focused on the surveillance, pathogenesis and prevention of chronic non-communicable
diseases, with the capacity to undertake essential national health research and influence health policy
and practice in Barbados and the wider Caribbean. Over the past 5 years the CDRC has raised US $ 8.1M
in extramural grants and published over 100 papers in the peer-reviewed scientific literature. A Scientific
Report (2006-2010) published recently provides in detail the research and academic outputs of the
centre for this period.
