HCC reaching out to Bahamas NGOs
The Cancer Society of the Bahamas, led by President, Ms. Lovern Wildgoose, welcomed the HCC to its impressive operation on Friday September 20th during a recent visit to Nassau, Bahamas. Professor Trevor Hassell, HCC President, met with staff and volunteers of the BCS and toured the headquarters. During the visit HCC presented Ms Wildgoose with a Caribbean Cervical Cancer Electronic Petition (CCCEP) radio PSA for release to local radio stations. The CSB was a buzz with activities in preparation for October Breast Cancer Awareness Month and presented the HCC with promotional T-shirts for the event.
Professor Hassell also visited the Sir Victor Sassoon Heart Foundation where he met with Chairman, R.E Barnes and Treasurer, Linda LaFleur. Thelma Johnson, President of the Bahamas Heart Association (sister organisation of the Sassoon Heart Foundation) was also present. During the visit Professor Hassell shared information about the HCC and extended invitations to both organisations to become active and strong supporting membes of the HCC. At the conclusion of the visit Professor Hassell commented that these three organisations were among the oldest NCD related health NGOs in the Caribbean and provided respectively outstanding service to the people of the Bahamas in the prevention and treatment of cancer, in surgical correction of heart problems in children and in the prevention of heart disease.

Curbing the Non-communicable disease epidemic in the Caribbean - President of the HCC Professor Trevor hassell gave a keynote address at the recent Seventh Annual Research Day of the University of the West Indies School of Clinical Medicine and Research, Bahamas, 19 - 20 September 2013 entiled Curbing the Non-communicable disease epidemic in the Caribbean. The epidemic of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the Caribbean is one in which a group of diseases, namely, cardiovascular diseases (heart disease and stroke), diabetes, cancers and chronic lung disease account for 65% of the burden of disease in the Region. This group of diseases is influenced by lifestyle, medical care delivery, environment and heredity. The World Heart Federation has partnered with leading international healthcare group, Bupa, to mark this year’s World Heart Day with the launch of a global walking campaign entitled the Ground Miles Challenge. This initiative challenges people around the world to walk 5 million miles (8 million kilometres) by the end of 2013.

Mrs. Deborah Chen, one of the Directors of the Healthy Caribbean Coalition, Vice President of the World Heart Federation and Executive Director of the Heart Foundation of Jamaica (HFJ) received the Tobacco Control Champion Award for her advocacy in tobacco control in Jamaica at the recently concluded International Conference on Public Health Priorities in the 21st Century: The Endgame for Tobacco held in New Delhi India September 10-12.
