The Heart Foundation of Jamaica and the Jamaica Coalition for Tobacco Control have received funds for a short term rapid response grant -
The rapid response grant helps to address urgent country-specific tobacco control needs, such as the implementation and enforcement of the Public Health Tobacco Control Act, for which civil society can play a very important role. HFJ/JCTC had previous two year grant from the International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease which ended on June 30, 2013.
This grant facilitated the speedy passage, enactment and monitoring of comprehensive tobacco control legislation in Jamaica, aligned with the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. The outcomes of this grant were that the Coalition was able to support the MOH in the enactment of the Public Health Tobacco Control Act on July 15, 2013. Unfortunately, the grant was not extended, at a time when we felt that the MOH needed additional civil society support as we rolled out the implementation and monitoring of the Tobacco regulations. This current rapid response will support the Government of Jamaica through the Ministry of Health as they implement and monitor the newly enacted Tobacco Control Regulations.
We at the Jamaica Coalition for Tobacco Control are committed to supporting these tobacco regulations using the technical support we have from our international partners and continuing the sensitization meetings and media advocacy around the important issues regarding tobacco control.
