HCC Welcomes New Member - Belize Diabetes Association

Anthony Castillo, President, BDA The Belize Diabetes Association (BDA) is a NGO which was established in 1991 by a group of professionals, primarily Doctors. The Association was established at that time due to an increase in the number of person being diagnosed with diabetes. “A situation which still exist”

The Association is a support group for persons living with diabetes, at this time; it has a membership of approximately 250 persons. There is an executive council which manages the affairs of the Association.

All the executive members are voluntary. There is election of officers every three years.

The BDA was highlighted in a summary of forthcoming events on the IDF website - In Belize, the signature activity of World Diabetes Day celebrations organised by the Belize Diabetes Association will be "Ride Out Diabetes", a two-day bicycle awareness ride covering 160 miles. The association's activities will culminate on 14 November with a health fair involving schools and the general public.

Jamaica: smoke-free public places & graphic health warnings regulations

Jamaica: smoke-free public places & graphic health warnings regulations Eight years after Jamaica ratified the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) in 2005, the country has finally passed regulations banning smoking in public places and workplaces. The regulations also call for graphic health warnings on cigarette packs. The delay was due in part to lack of political will and the fact that tobacco control was not seen as a priority by the government. The new regulations were enacted on 25 June 2013, and have been warmly welcomed by the Heart Foundation of Jamaica (HFJ) and the Jamaica Coalition for Tobacco Control (JCTC). Read more

Mandatory cancer registry proposed Cayman Islands - Experts have declared unqualified support for Premier Alden McLaughlin’s announcement of official efforts to create a mandatory national cancer registry, boosted by explicit reassurances over privacy concerns. Addressing the Legislative Assembly, Mr. McLaughlin devoted a section of his budget speech on Monday to designating cancer as a “reportable disease,” making it obligatory for hospitals, clinics and private doctors to report its occurrence. This would facilitate data collection and boost public health by collating information about the incidence and prevalence of cancer. Read more

Congratulations to the Dominica Cancer Society - The Dominica Cancer Society is to receive a 'Meritorious Service Award' at Dominicas Independance Celebrations, in recognition of 40 years public and commnunity involvement in the fight against cancer.
