EDUFEST – Young People Fight Back Kimlin Harrilal HCC Social Media Content Creator/Education and Communications Officer - Trinidad & Tobago Cancer Society explains the philosophy and the history of EDUFEST an education initiative.

EDUFEST evolves yet again as The Trinidad and Tobago Cancer Society seeks to educate Primary School children about cancer and cancer prevention for the very first time.

In 2007, the Society realized that there was a crucial need to teach young people about developing healthy lifestyles as a means to prevent this dreaded NCD. The TTCS collaborated with Republic Bank Limited, our valued sponsor to make this a reality. After all, continuous support via health fairs and lectures to adults throughout Trinidad and Tobago were being facilitated by the Cancer Society.

Through the generosity and vision of Republic Bank Limited this initiative gave The Trinidad and Tobago Cancer Society “the power to make a difference” in the lives of the future generation of Trinidad and Tobago. Read more

Outside of grappling and trying to come to terms with the reality that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer and the taxing treatment procedures to follow, many have had to undergo a mastectomy - the removal of one or both breasts.

Since the Tobacco Control Regulations have come into effect, there have been those who express the opinion that these regulations will hurt the poor; however, quite the opposite is the case. Government policies must benefit the majority of the population, and not the vested interests of a few. Health cannot be 'balanced' with profit. Read more

UK Health Forum: Evidence in public health UK Health Forum: Evidence in public health - Online Survey Results - The UK Health Forum recently undertook a survey with an aim to establish how those working in public health define ‘evidence’ in public health, what evidence they use and how frequently, what barriers they experience in accessing and using evidence and what factors they think affect evidence. There is an executive summary in the beginning of the report. All the data are included in the report. One of the main findings of the survey was the concern over the effect on bias on evidence.

Let's unite and fight - Jamaica - With the rapid increase of breast cancer throughout the world, it would be far from erroneous to say everyone knows someone who has been affected by the disease. Breast cancer is impartial to age, status or race and for every person that dies from it, another is diagnosed. However, if you have been diagnosed with the disease, the battle is not lost. NCD Alliance E-Alert - UN Interagency Task Force on NCDs - The first meeting of the formalised UN Interagency Task Force on NCDs (IATF) was held on 2-3 October in Geneva. The IATF was established through a ECOSOC resolution in July, by expanding the mandate of the existing United Nations Ad Hoc Interagency Task Force on Tobacco Control. Also Consultations on NCDs – Deadlines and Upcoming Meetings - WHO is currently holding two consultations on NCDs, both of which were mandated by the 2013 WHA resolution. Read more

Health leaders pledge action to reduce deaths from NCDs by 25% by 2025 - Joint plan seeks to reduce incidence of cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and chronic respiratory disease. Washington, D.C., 4 October 2013 (PAHO/WHO) - Health authorities from the Americas agreed on a joint plan of action that seeks to reduce premature deaths due to noncommuncable diseases (NCDs) by 25% by the year 2025.
