CARPHA Vows to Fight Childhood Obesity - The Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) is working on a multi-level programme designed to promote healthy weight and reverse the scourge of childhood obesity in the Region. During a media briefing after the Agency’s three-day strategic planning workshop, CARPHA’s Director of Research, Training and Policy Development, Dr. Donald Simeon, revealed that CARPHA will launch a pilot project with its member states in 2014. CARPHA Workshop: Prevention and Control of Childhood Obesity in the Caribbean: A Call To Action - On Wednesday March 19th, 2014 CARPHA will be holding in a workshop entitled: Prevention and Control of Childhood Obesity in the Caribbean: A Call To Action. The objective of the workshop is to consult with stakeholders towards the development of a Plan of Action, for CARPHA and other stakeholders for the Prevention and Control of Childhood Obesity.

CARPHA partners with CTO to establish a Tourism and Health Program - It is recognized that the Caribbean is the most tourism dependent region in the world and that the industry is vulnerable to health, safety and environmental issues, such as foodborne and enteric disease outbreaks, and climatic change. Dr C. James Hospedales, Executive Director of CARPHA pointed out that "challenges faced in the industry are preventable through collaborative efforts with regional and global partners to improve monitoring and response, training and standards. In so doing, CARPHA is responding to an identified need in the region as the majority of CARPHA’s member states are dependent on tourism." Read more
HCC president calls for NCDs to be included in national Development Plans
(Barbados Today) One of this island’s advocates for healthy lifestyle is calling for policies on the prevention and reduction of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) to be included in the National Development Plan. The plan, which has six strategic goals, was launched in 2005 with the objective of realizing by 2025 the national aspiration to become a fully developed society that is prosperous, socially just and globally competitive. Cervical Cancer Is On the Rise In The Caribbean - According to Professor Sir Trevor Hassell President of the Healthy Caribbean Coalition (HCC) approximately six deaths per day in the Caribbean are caused by cervical cancer, and efforts are on the way to raise awareness. Infection with high-risk human papilloma virus (HPV) is the main cause of cervical cancer. It is also the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) globally. Low-risk classification of HPV generally can lead to benign lesions such as warts. Read more

HPV vaccine use among African American girls - Qualitative formative research using a participatory social marketing approach. Highlights - Skeptical mothers need in-depth information about vaccine safety and age recommendations to accept the vaccine; Mothers suggested promoting HPV vaccine together with other pre-teen vaccines, targeting both boys and girls, and emphasizing cancer prevention; Findings suggest need to “normalize” perception of HPV vaccine as a routine vaccine rather than singling it out as unique. Washington, D.C., 10 March 2013 (PAHO/WHO) — The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) is calling on consumers to “Stop, look, choose…the lower salt option” during this year’s World Salt Awareness Week, March 10–16. This year’s campaign highlights the importance of nutrition labelling to inform consumers about the salt content in processed foods, a growing source of dietary salt. Read more
WHO opens public consultation on draft sugars guideline - WHO is launching a public consultation on its draft guideline on sugars intake. When finalized, the guideline will provide countries with recommendations on limiting the consumption of sugars to reduce public health problems like obesity and dental caries (commonly referred to as tooth decay). Current situation in Latin America and the Caribbean - Hypertension is the leading cause of death and the second disability cause in the world for cardio and cerebrovascular disease. In Latin America, the prevalence of hypertension ranges from 26 to 42% in the general adult population and excessive salt intake is the main risk factor for hypertension in both adults and children. A high-salt diet causes kidney disease, gastric cancer5, asthma, obesity, etc.
