Jamaica Cancer Society take PAP Smears to Rural Areas of Jamaica
As part of the HCC led Australian Direct Aid Programme, the Jamaica Cancer Society is on the road to rural areas informing and educating the local communities on the need to be tested for cervical cancer and providing a mobile PAP smear testing facility. In the pictures above JCS Executive Director Yulit Gordon can be seen addressing the women on the need to have their pap smears done and Nurse Hall the JCS Head Nurse is shown preparing for action. Some men also accompanied their women to be screened. To-date JCS have done 160 PAP smears as their road trip continues to another rural community on the southern side of the island.
Jamaica Coalition for Tobacco Control Statement on the Amendments to the Tobacco Control Regulations (2013) - The Jamaica Coalition for Tobacco Control is disappointed with some of the amendments that were made to the Tobacco Control (2013) Regulations as tabled in Parliament on Tuesday January 25. The regulations as initially drafted were in line with international best practices and were the result of evidence based research. Similar legislation is in place in several countries and follows excellent guidelines from the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, the world's first public health treaty.Read more

NCD Child invites submissions of abstracts to be presented at the 2014 NCD Child Conference. There will be two categories for submission - Abstracts for the Young Health Scholarships 2014 (for those 24 and under) and Abstracts for publication within the Conference Program. Read more

WHO: Imminent global cancer 'disaster' reflects aging, lifestyle factors - (CNN) Cancer cases are expected to surge 57% worldwide in the next 20 years, an imminent "human disaster" that will require a renewed focus on prevention to combat, according to the World Health Organization. The World Cancer Report, produced by the WHO's specialized cancer agency and released on World Cancer Day, predicts new cancer cases will rise from an estimated 14 million annually in 2012 to 22 million within two decades. Over the same period, cancer deaths are predicted to rise from 8.2 million a year to 13 million. Read more

NCD Alliance Alert - World Cancer Day 2014 Approximately 7.6 million people die from cancer globally each year. This number will only continue to rise without increased awareness and immediate action. Greater awareness and education about cancer can lead to positive change at an individual, community and policy level and across the continuum of cancer care.
