THE HONOURABLE MINISTER for HEALTH of Dominica, Mr. Julius C. Timothy has joined leadership throughout the region in signing the Caribbean Cervical Cancer E-Petition (CCCEP)

THE HONOURABLE MINISTER for HEALTH of Dominica, Mr. Julius C. Timothy The Dominica Cancer Society has led the way in Dominica encouraging Dominicans from all walks of life to put their support behind the regional petition which calls for the improvement in cervical cancer policy and programming leading to the prevention of some 2100 deaths of Caribbean women each year.

The Honourable Mr. Timothy is now part of growing group of regional leaders who have publicly supported the CCCEP, including the Minister of Public Health, Social Development and Labour Hon. Cornelius de Weever of St. Maarten; Mrs. Kim Simplis Barrow, Wife of the Belize PM, Special Envoy for Women and Children and a cancer survivor; PM of St. Kitts & Nevis and CARICOM Lead Head of Government for Health, HIV and Human Resources, the Right Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas; and the Most Hon. Portia Simpson-Miller PM of Jamaica.

The HCC applauds the Honourable Minister and encourages other leaders throughout the region to follow his example.

Dr. Sook Yin, Medical Director of the CICS, and her amazing and dynamic team led by Victoria Anderson, Project Coordinator, are going 'gaga for cervical cancer awareness'.

We are truly excited about our numbers but are more excited that the overall numbers are growing. When we launched here in Cayman, it was going a bit slow so we picked it up a bit' stated Victoria, and now their numbers are at 700 in the space two weeks!

“Smoking Out Tobacco”: Caribbean Journalist wins Eighth Interamerican “Vital Air” Journalism Contest - The HCC is proud to showcase one of our own Caribbean journalists leading the way in NCD journalism. The InterAmerican Heart Foundation and the Global Bridges Healthcare Alliance for Tobacco Dependence Treatment recently announced the winners of the Eighth Interamerican “Vital Air” Journalism Contest focusing on Tobacco Dependence Treatment and supporting Article 14 of the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC).” The overall Winner and First Place Print - Ms. Tracy Moore of Barbados, a longtime member and valued contributor to the HCC. Ms. Moore's piece was entitled “Smoking Out Tobacco”. Read more

First Citizens Globeathon Barbados - A Walk To End Women's Cancers - Join our ambassadors soca queen Alison Hinds, Love FM's Gaynelle Marshall, Mrs. Carolyn Boyce (wife of Minister of Health Hon. Mr. John Boyce) and others at the bay street esplanade, Sunday, September 29th, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. for a 5km walk. On the weekend of September 29, 2013, participants in over 80 countries, will be making history by walking in solidarity with each other and with millions of women and families affected by gynecologic cancers. Sagicor joins fight - Over the next few weeks, clients of Sagicor Life Inc and visitors to the company’s Trident House and Belleville Customer Service branches will have the opportunity to join the fight against cervical cancer. The regional insurance company has provided access to an online petition, created by the Healthy Caribbean Coalition, to address the issue of access to affordable cervical cancer screening. 5th International Cancer Control Congress

The HCC has been accepted to participate in the 5th International Cancer Control Congress - to be held at the Westin Lima Hotel and Conference Center in Lima, Peru from November 3-6, 2013 as an Oral Abstract Presenter. The HCC will be presenting our abstract: Creating a Civil Society Led Cervical Cancer Advocacy Movement – The Caribbean Cervical Cancer Electronic Petition in the session Mobilizing all of society for effective cancer control. New Study Finds Population Sodium Reduction is Promising - A new study, published in the journal Current Atherosclerosis Reports, reviewed economic analyses of interventions to reduce sodium intake and found that both lowering the salt content in processed foods and conducting national mass media campaigns are estimated to be cost-effective in preventing cardiovascular disease (CVD). Estimates provided in the study of resultant blood pressure decreases and decreases in the incidence of CVD events support population-wide sodium reduction interventions. Study authors note that, “although better data on the cost of interventions are needed for rigorous economic evaluations, population-wide sodium intake reduction can be a promising approach for containing the growing health and economic burden associated with hypertension and its sequelae.” The study, “Recent Economic Evaluations of Interventions to Prevent Cardiovascular Disease by Reducing Sodium Intake” may be found here

Diabetes regional youth representative ready for climb - Barbados Advocate - On August 30, Krystal Boyea will embark on a courageous journey to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, with the support of local business entities including Sagicor Life Inc. As the International Diabetes Federation’s Youth Regional Representative for the North American and Caribbean Region, Krystal will join nine other Type 1 Diabetics from around the world who will make the arduous trek to the peak of the world-famous African mountain. Mount Kilimanjaro stretches 15 100 feet from its base to its summit. The youth representatives have embarked on the climb to raise awareness about the diseases and demonstrate that persons diagnosed with diabetes are not limited by their condition. Read more

Release of the World Health Report 2013 - NCD Alliance - WHO has released the World Health Report: Research for Universal Health Coverage which can be accessed here. The report focuses on the importance of research to achieve progress towards UHC. It highlights case studies around the world that showcases the benefits of an increased investment in health research in low and middle-income countries. Read more
