“Smoking Out Tobacco”: Caribbean Journalist wins Eighth Interamerican “Vital Air” Journalism Contest - The HCC is proud to showcase one of our own Caribbean journalists leading the way in NCD journalism. The InterAmerican Heart Foundation and the Global Bridges Healthcare Alliance for Tobacco Dependence Treatment recently announced the winners of the Eighth Interamerican “Vital Air” Journalism Contest focusing on Tobacco Dependence Treatment and supporting Article 14 of the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC).” The overall Winner and First Place Print - Ms. Tracy Moore of Barbados, a longtime member and valued contributor to the HCC. Sagicor joins fight - Over the next few weeks, clients of Sagicor Life Inc and visitors to the company’s Trident House and Belleville Customer Service branches will have the opportunity to join the fight against cervical cancer. The regional insurance company has provided access to an online petition, created by the Healthy Caribbean Coalition, to address the issue of access to affordable cervical cancer screening. The HCC has been accepted to participate in the 5th International Cancer Control Congress - to be held at the Westin Lima Hotel and Conference Center in Lima, Peru from November 3-6, 2013 as an Oral Abstract Presenter. New Study Finds Population Sodium Reduction is Promising - A new study, published in the journal Current Atherosclerosis Reports, reviewed economic analyses of interventions to reduce sodium intake and found that both lowering the salt content in processed foods and conducting national mass media campaigns are estimated to be cost-effective in preventing cardiovascular disease (CVD). Estimates provided in the study of resultant blood pressure decreases and decreases in the incidence of CVD events support population-wide sodium reduction interventions. Study authors note that, “although better data on the cost of interventions are needed for rigorous economic evaluations, population-wide sodium intake reduction can be a promising approach for containing the growing health and economic burden associated with hypertension and its sequelae.” The study, “Recent Economic Evaluations of Interventions to Prevent Cardiovascular Disease by Reducing Sodium Intake” may be found here
Diabetes regional youth representative ready for climb - Barbados Advocate - On August 30, Krystal Boyea will embark on a courageous journey to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, with the support of local business entities including Sagicor Life Inc. As the International Diabetes Federation’s Youth Regional Representative for the North American and Caribbean Region, Krystal will join nine other Type 1 Diabetics from around the world who will make the arduous trek to the peak of the world-famous African mountain. Mount Kilimanjaro stretches 15 100 feet from its base to its summit. The youth representatives have embarked on the climb to raise awareness about the diseases and demonstrate that persons diagnosed with diabetes are not limited by their condition. Read more

Release of the World Health Report 2013 - NCD Alliance - WHO has released the World Health Report: Research for Universal Health Coverage which can be accessed here. The report focuses on the importance of research to achieve progress towards UHC. The Dominica Cancer Society has led the way in Dominica encouraging Dominicans from all walks of life to put their support behind the regional petition which calls for the improvement in cervical cancer policy and programming leading to the prevention of some 2100 deaths of Caribbean women each year.
