Heads of state from other regions pledge to share lessons, mobilize efforts to fight NCDs
New York, 19 September 2011 (PAHO/WHO) — Heads of state and health leaders from the Caribbean reached out to their counterparts in other regions to urge stronger collaborative action against noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), as the United Nations General Assembly passed a historic resolution on the same subject today.

Conflicts of interest and the UN high-level meeting on
non-communicable diseases - The Lancet 16th September 2011.
Many non-governmental organisations and professional groups are increasingly concerned by the current UN approach to engaging with private-sector and trade associations whose products and marketing contribute to the development of non-communicable diseases (NCD). The UN high-level meeting on NCDs (chiefly cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and chronic respiratory diseases) on Sept 19—20, 2011, will present an unprecedented opportunity to address this important but neglected global health issue.1 More than 140 public-interest organisations from around the world have signed up to the Conflict of Interest Declaration,2 which has been sent to the President of the General Assembly, and the co-convenors of the high-level meeting—the Ambassadors from Luxembourg and Jamaica.

September 2011 – A new global analysis reveals that some of
the poorest countries in the world have among the highest
age-standardized mortality rates of cardiovascular disease
(CVD). The data, launched today ahead of the United Nations
High-Level Meeting (HLM) on Non-Communicable Diseases,
reveals growing inequalities in the cases and deaths of CVD
between countries and populations, with the percentage of
premature deaths from CVD more than twice as high in
low-income countries compared with high-income countries.

ProCor - a global community promoting cardiovascular health
- UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs. - The United Nations will hold a high-level meeting on non-communicable diseases in September 2011 (UN Summit on NCDs). This Summit will bring unprecedented attention to NCDs and their devastating effect on low- and middle-income countries.
Although it is not 100% clear what will result from the Summit, many different organizations, groups, and individuals are advocating for concrete outcomes such as funding and mandatory reporting requirements.
The ProCor network sits uniquely in a position to provide a strong, unified voice during this advocacy time leading up to the Summit. Being a diverse community of experts (from community health workers to multinational institutions), we want to hear your thoughts on what the Summit needs to focus on. What needs to be done to address the global burden of NCDs (and more specifically CVDs)? What needs to change?
